National 4 & 5 Design and Manufacture
Pupils learn about traditional and modern design and manufacturing methods and get first hand experience of manufacturing in the department, as far as our facilities allow.
The course is project based. Typically a project progresses from brief, to research, design, development, manufacture, evaluation. The projects have a workshop based final product, with a prototype / mock-ups, others terminate with a design only.
National 4 Design and Manufacture will be an internal assessment.
At National 5 there is a total of 180 marks are available. 100 of the marks requires pupils to respond to a design and manufacture brief set by the exam board and the final 80 set as an examination in April / May
National 4/5
The course consists of 3 mandatory units including an added value unit.
(1) DESIGN This allows the students to develop an appreciation of the design / make / test process and the importance of evaluating and resolving work on an on-going basis. The students will consider the various factors that influence the design process.
(2) MATERIALS & MANUFACTURING This unit covers the product design proposals to prototype. It allows the learners to develop practical skills that are invaluable in the design / make /test process. It allows the student to refine and resolve design and manufacturing solutions.
(3)ADDED VALUE UNIT ( Nat4) and a Design & Manufacture assignment.(Nat5) Students will draw on their range of design knowledge and practical skills to produce a folio and a model set by the SQA
