S1 & S3 – Curriculum for Excellence (Broad General Education)
DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
Purpose and Aims of the course
The course will be delivered throughout S1-3 and will provide a broad practical introduction to design and technology. It provides opportunities for learners to gain basic skills in both designing and communicating design ideas. It allows learners to explore and amend design ideas through model making and testing in both product design and engineering contexts using graphical communication. the course provides opportunities to develop and enhance practical creativity, practical problem solving skills and an appreciation of safe working practices in a workshop or similar environment.
S1 pupils will experience a wide range of activities, in varied learning settings.
Students are challenged to work individually, with a partner and as part of a team. They learn about design and how design and manufacturing choices impact on the environment. Students are encouraged to research each task they encounter, produce a design folio and manufacture a product of their own personal choice. Each student will produce three models ranging in a variety and combination of materials.
Manual and computer based design and presentation techniques are used as appropriate. All assignments lead to the construction of a 3D product,
Students will reflect upon their work and their new learning, drawing conclusions and lessons for the future. While S1 are studying within the framework of Curriculum for Excellence, the students will follow a curriculum which will prepare them for the courses we will offer in S2.
